The world’s premier offshore race which started in Alicante, Spain on 4th October 2014, stops in eight different ports – including Abu Dhabi – before finishing in Gothenburg, Sweden in June 2015. This time an all-female crew will race against Volvo Ocean Race veterans and first-time rookies. The teams from around the world compete with the elements as well as with each other venturing into the brutal Southern Ocean where they pit their skills against giant seas and icebergs.

The Volvo Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world and is held once every three years. The strict rules of the race allows the 9 crew members to only bring on board what is absolutely essential for their survival and crosses through some of the most treacherous seas around the world. Some of the legs are so demanding crews can find themselves 20 days out in sea with temperatures varying between -5 to +40 degrees Celsius.

The race goes on for 9 months, and this year’s Abu Dhabi Stopover is at the end of Leg 2 which gave the chance to see these amazing racing machines in action during the In Port Race and on 3rd January 2015 as they left for Sanya, China at the start of Leg 3.
